The first few scenes of Amelie gives recognition to all the small random things in life that make people happier. These things are so small, so random, and so seemingly insignificant that they are only subconsciously registered. So, for a change, I'd like to stop talking about the things, the people and places I hate, (because there's a lot of them) and focus on something else. The happiness these small things bestow upon us is as enigmatic as the existence of toilets that flush automatically. These things are like the backstage workers of a play or a concert or a big company, they are the unnoticed and the unappreciated. They are the things that give us short bursts of happiness, and I think they're important.
1) The feeling of taking off your socks before you go to sleep and after you've been under the covers for a long time. I don't know why it feels so nice, it just does.
2) The "pop" sound that happens when you open new jars and bottles of Snapple.
3) Those toxic rainbows that make their way into puddles of gasoline.
4) Submerging your hands into a large bowl of uncooked rice.
5) Finding any bill larger than $1 in your old pants and feeling like you just made money, even though you had it all along.
6) When you go out on a limb and tell a group of people something weird about yourself and they all excitedly exclaim, "I DO THAT TOO."
7) Getting your sneeze out.
8) Not wanting to take a shower, but then never wanting to leave once you get in it.
9) Putting on clothes right out of the dryer.
10) Shaving your legs and then wearing silk pants. (Maybe this isn't as common as I think it is).
11) Guessing with a 50/50 chance and getting it right.
12) Knowing every word to a song.
13) All those small random dishes of food that your grandparents always seem to have laying around.
14) When the waiter gives you bread and butter and the butter is warm enough to spread.
15) Finally finding the remote.
16) Scented markers.
17) When your converse look worn out instead of brand new and you suddenly feel cooler.
18) Bathrooms that have toilet covers so you don't have to waste your leg strength squatting over some other squatters mess of urine.
19) Comfortable silences between good friends or family members
20) Peeling glue off your fingers and having it come of in a clean strip.
21) Dipping your fingers into wax and running the hardened wax finger caps over your arms.
22) Getting everything onto your fork, creating the perfect bite.
23) Smelling dryer sheets.
24) When someone can't finish the rest of their food that you have been longingly staring at (though, not in a rude way) and they offer you the rest of it.
25) When your trying to undo a knot in your sneaker and you pull on one string really hard and suddenly, the whole knot comes undone and you don't know how.
26) Free samples.
27) How quiet it is under water.
28) Inspecting the Biore pore strip you ripped off of your nose for a very long time.
29) Catching a good movie on t.v right as it starts.
30) The drop in your stomach when you drive down a hill.
31) Listening to the favorite part of your favorite song and falling into a trance.
32) The smell of gasoline.
33) Watching the patterns that smoke make
34) Waking up, looking at the clock and seeing that it's 3am and you have so much longer to sleep than you thought.
35) Swimming while it's raining.
36) Waking up from a bad dream and feeling relief wash over you when you realize that you are not pregnant nor have you been kidnapped by Indians.
I was originally only going to write 10, but there's too many of them to just write 10.
